Andrew Luck injury updates can only tell new Colts coach Frank Reich so much

“House Calls” will take on a whole new meaning this offseason for the Colts.

Tom House and his staff of quarterback trainers at the 3DQB academy in Southern California are not only working with Andrew Luck this offseason as the Colts star continues his rehabilitation from shoulder surgery. House and Co. are the conduit between Luck and Indianapolis in sharing news about the former’s recovery. Rules prohibit football-related contact between the two parties until April 2, when the Colts launch their offseason workout program.

Luck’s absence — and the team’s failure to adequately prepare for a worst-case scenario — was a huge factor in the Colts finishing with a 4-12 record that cost Pagano his job.

In a pre-taped interview that aired during a Colts “town hall meeting” Tuesday night in Indianapolis, Luck said his rehabilitation was going well and the “ship has sailed in my mind” about needing a second surgery. Reich said he’s hopeful Luck will be able throw a football during the team’s offseason program but wouldn’t go further than that.

The officials determined after review that Maroon interfered with goaltender Antti Raanta’s ability to make the save. According to the NHL, Maroon interfered with Raanta before the puck crossed the goal line, so the call was reversed.

Hurney is currently in his second stint as GM in Carolina. He served in the role from 2002 through 2012, when he was fired after the team’s 1-5 start. Last July, he was hired on an interim basis to replace the fired Dave Gettleman.

Bills assistant college scouting director Lake Dawson, Texans assistant general manager Jimmy Raye II and 49ers senior personnel executive Martin Mayhew are also candidates for the job.

When a team invests a first-round pick in a player, it represents millions of dollars of the club’s scouting budget spent to identify such a player. Then the contract itself is a major financial undertaking. It’s easy to cut a seventh-round pick who gets jammed up, but it takes guts for a team to dump a first-round starter due to off-field misconduct.

The Bruins are 0-for-10 on the power play during their trip and coach Bruce Cassidy admits that it is a concern.

“Yeah, there is,” Cassidy said. “I don’t like our execution lately. It hasn’t hurt us much, but as some point it will. Clearly in Vancouver I guess you could point to that, but when you lose 6-1 there’s a lot of things going on. Certainly, a power-play (goal) could have gotten us back in the game. It’s not where it needs to be, let’s put it that way. It’s an area of our game that needs to improve.”

Defenseman Nick Holden, who was obtained in a trade with the New York Rangers on Tuesday, is not expected to play Saturday. He joined the team in Toronto and is expected to need a few practices.

Roughly a week later Martin sent a message to his father telling him he wished he had his toughness after he just laughed off some calling him the n-word.

“I don’t do anything. I suppose it’s white private school conditioning, turning the other cheek,” the text read in part.

Thursday’s Instagram post is just the latest in a string of events that raise serious concerns about Martin. In a Facebook post in August 2015, Martin wrote of multiple suicide attempts, sleep problems and substance abuse.

Before the game, though, Harry Connick Jr. performed the national anthem. And Chuck Knoll — a four-time Super Bowl-winning head coach — participated in the coin flip.

The injury, rehabilitation and timetable for a return has complicated the Spurs’ and Leonard’s relationship, causing tension and fraying the fabric of what was once a strong partnership, league sources told ESPN. The uncertainty surrounding this season — and Leonard’s future, which could include free agency in the summer of 2019 — has inspired a palpable stress around the organization, league sources said.

Our friendship goes back many years, Belichick said via USA Today. Anybody who spends more than five minutes with me knows I’m not a political person. My comments are not politically motivated. I have a friendship with Donald.

The Make America Great Again slogan is intrinsically tied to Trump and forever will be. So naturally, when a hat bearing the phrase showed up in Brady’s locker shortly after Trump confirmed his candidacy for president, it implied support.

Jeter, the longtime face of the Yankees and a future Hall of Famer, has come under criticism for numerous decisions since taking over in Miami.

I think it’s something that probably had to happen, Yelich said. The name of the game is to win, and we just didn’t get it done as a group there. Derek was my favorite player growing up. I had a lot of respect for him, and I still have a lot of respect for him.

Another American name to watch is Nathan Chen, making his first Olympics at 18 years old. He’ll be trying to bounce back after a nervy performance in the team short program, and has the natural talent to make a serious medal run. Seventeen-year-old Vincent Zhou will also be making his Olympic debut here.

The top medal contenders feature Japanese Yuzuru Hanyu and Canadian Patrick Chan, who won gold and silver in Sochi, respectively. Javier Fernandez of Spain, Yan Han of China, Shoma Uno of Japan (the winner in team short program), and Denis Ten of Kazakhstan (the Sochi bronze medalist) are the other big names to watch in what should be a fiercely competitive event.

Recapturing some of the lost spin on his fastball is one way, as our internal pitch-tracking tool had him generating more than 400 fewer rpm with it last season than he did in 2013, which could explain how right-handed hitters teed off on it (.332/.385/.522 rates against the fastball alone). Otherwise, Corbin really only needs better luck on batted balls, as his .329 BABIP and 11.2 home run/fly ball rate were both easily greater than his career numbers in those categories.

Clearly it’s because I’m in love with the guy, as this is the third consecutive year (and fourth in the past five) that Gausman has made my list. What can I say, skills are skills. Perhaps this is a poor approach, ид la Lego Batman tossing countless Batarangs and then saying first try! when he hits. But here’s the thing: I’ve learned all too often that when a player’s underlying skills suggest burgeoning greatness, it’s a terrible idea to bail on him simply because you’ve been burned in the past (see: Adrian Beltre, 2004).

The 32-year-old Cespedes is noticeably trimmer.

He’s had a great offseason, new Mets manager Mickey Callaway said. He’s done a lot more running than he’s done in the past. Everybody identified that he needed that.

Cespedes played a career-high 159 games in 2015 with Detroit and the Mets, helping New York reach the World Series for the first time since 2000.

I want to be an MVP. That hasn’t changed. Last season I was unlucky because I was hurt, he said. Injuries are unpreventable, but what I learned is to prepare more to avoid those kinds of things this season.

Callaway approached Wilmer Flores about possibly playing the outfield some starting this week, and the Venezuelan infielder welcomed the opportunity. I learned how to play first base to be in the lineup, Flores said.

In a statement, Becker said: We are very fortunate to have Marty as our general manager after he did an exceptional job in the interim role this past season. Marty’s guidance and vision helped build the foundation for this team, and his work this season was instrumental in returning the team to the playoffs. We believe he will continue to craft a roster that will win games and contend for a championship.

The Panthers were preparing to make this announcement several weeks ago, but put the process on hold after Hurney’s ex-wife accused him of harassment when seeking a temporary restraining order in court. The order was not granted and the complaint was dropped, but the NFL still conducted a two-week investigation to assure there was no violation under the league’s personal conduct policy.

There’s no other way around it. Say you have your favorite team, 25 players on the active roster, all contributing something to an effort you are fully, emotionally committed to. Call them the 2017 Astros or the 2017 Dodgers or the 2017 Phillies. You love that group, just as you loved them one year earlier. But of those 25 players, only (on average) 15 were on the active roster at the start of 2016. A little more than 40 percent of the team turns over from the start of one year to the end of the next.

We, as fans, mostly don’t flinch at this radical turnover. Some might feel stung, but we roll with almost half the team turning into brand-new people. We don’t think about the 2017 Dodgers as a fundamentally new team.

The Bills kept pace with the Patriots in the AFC East, moving to 5-2 with a 34-14 victory over the 3-5 Oakland Raiders.

In Cincinnati, the 3-4 Bengals eked out a 25-24 victory over the 2-6 Indianapolis Colts.

The NFL’s best team, at least at the moment, continued to be the Philadelphia Eagles, who topped winless San Francisco 33-10. Carson Wentz passed for 211 yards in that game.

The day began with a business-as-usual game from the Cleveland Browns, who flew to London and lost 33-16 to the Minnesota Vikings. Although the winless Browns led 13-12 at the half, the Vikings had no trouble after that, with Case Keenum completing 27 of 43 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns (with one interception). The Browns’ DeShone Kizer completed 18 of 34 passes for 179 yards.

On Monday night, the 3-3 Denver Broncos play the 5-2 Chiefs in Kansas City in an important NFC West game.

Newton was criticized last week, and rightfully so, after his sexist remark for which he later apologized. But things are going extremely well on the field, and if this continues he will be an MVP candidate again and the Panthers will be Super Bowl contenders once more.

Ford, a four-year starter, is built like a fire hydrant with short arms. He is a terrific athlete with superior coordination, explosiveness and flexibility. He has a quick first step, which allows him to get under taller linemen and gain leverage to shoot into gaps.

Ford uses his explosiveness and flexibility to split gaps and penetrate up field and consistently affect the play. He compares to Sheldon Day in both body type and play style, and he will be best as a pass-rushing defensive tackle in a 4-3 scheme.

Lane Johnson should be able to win most of his battles against Danielle Hunter. Everson Griffen versus Halapoulivaati Vaitai is another story. If ever there was a game in which Philly needed Jason Peters …

It will be interesting to see whether Bruce Arians want to keep coaching in Arizona beyond this season.

He has done a pretty good job to keep this Cardinals team near .500. But how wearying is it at this point in his career to struggle so hard just to be mediocre?

So does Kyle Shanahan deserve credit for waiting until Jimmy Garoppolo was ready — really ready — to play before putting him in the lineup? Or does he deserve blame because Garoppolo should have been playing sooner? The Niners still have never lost a game started by Garoppolo.

This might come as a surprise, but Hackenberg and Geno both got off to nice starts on Thursday.

Hackenberg displayed the ability to actually put some touch on a pass when he hit Austin Seferian-Jenkins for a 12-yard score:

President Trump’s wish that NFL owners fire players who kneel during the national anthem is unlikely to come true. In fact, his vulgar and inflammatory remarks about players such as Colin Kaepernick, who chose to kneel for the national anthem to peacefully protest, might end up having the opposite effect.

“Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out! He’s fired. He’s fired!’?” Trump said at a political rally in Alabama on Friday. “You know, some owner is going to do that. He’s going to say, ‘That guy that disrespects our flag, he’s fired.’ And that owner, they don’t know it [but] they’ll be the most popular person in this country.”

Perhaps also concerning? The Eagles defense, which did not look stout the final three weeks of the season. Holding the Cowboys to just six points was nice, but this was not the same unit that dominated throughout the regular season. It’s entirely possible the defensive line reverts back to its previous form and Jay Ajayi/LeGarrette Blount turn into a winter weather duo of destruction in the rushing attack.

The victory is the fourth in the playoffs when trailing by 10 or more points in the fourth quarter. No other quarterback has more than one.

It looked as if the Jaguars were going to advance after taking a 20-10 lead on two field goals. With the Patriots driving in the fourth quarter, Myles Jack came up with a big play, stripping the ball from Dion Lewis. But these are the Patriots. They simply went on another drive, closing within 20-17 on a nine-yard touchdown pass from Brady to Amendola.

And then Brady and Amendola did it again, connecting on a four-yard touchdown pass that put New England up 24-20.

With more than a decade’s worth of data now, we’ve seen offensive line feature some of the slowest career progressions of any position. The famous “second-year jump” that a lot of players enjoy is more of a third- or even fourth-year jump along the offensive line. Williams has embodied that this season. Over his past seven games, Williams has allowed two combined sacks and hits. Last year he needed an injury elsewhere for him to crack the starting lineup; now he’s the highest-graded right tackle in the NFL.

The question for Kelce, more so than anyone else on this list, isn’t what happened to him this year to make him successful; it’s what happened last year that made him a possible cap casualty this past offseason? Kelce was PFF’s all-pro center in 2013 and has been consistently among the league’s best before the wheels fell off a season ago. He’s back atop our center rankings this season and there’s little reason to think he’ll revert to 2016 form.

The top two perimeter players on last season’s Jazz were Gordon Hayward and George Hill. Those two slots, this season, are taken by rookie Donovan Mitchell and offseason acquisition Ricky Rubio. There are clear differences in the skill sets of the two pairs of players, with Hayward and Hill as excellent long-range shooters and Mitchell as more of a rim-attacker and Rubio more of a non-shooter distributor.

The NFL had been investigating Elliott for more than a year, with league officials looking into a number of incidents involving Elliott, who led the NFL in rushing yards and attempts during his rookie season in 2016. Elliott’s ex-girlfriend accused him of five incidents of domestic violence over a six-day period in July 2016, though prosecutors in Columbus, Ohio, declined to press charges because of “conflicting and inconsistent information” from witnesses.

The key to winning big without an established, reliable QB is striking the right balance between caretaker and playmaker, conservative and aggressive. Immense talent across the board at other positions has allowed the Vikings and Eagles to push the right buttons with Keenum and Foles. It’s easier for a team to both take chances and not take them when it can pick up the QB through other phases.

When the game was finally over, an excited Davis jumped on Cousins and wrapped his arms around his neck.

“He played his heart out,” Davis said.

Cousins became the first NBA player since Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1972 to have as many as 40 points, 20 rebounds and 10 assists in a game, according to Elias Sports Bureau research. Few others have done it.

“Protect the receiver,” Smith added, before Irvin said he put the interception more on the receiver.

Anyhow, 12 hours later, Cousins made his weekly appearance on 106.7 The Fan’s Grant and Danny program. Midway through the appearance, he was asked about that NFL Network criticism. Cousins said he hadn’t heard it, and after it was summarized, he attempted to avoid entering a back-and-forth.

“I mean, I think those guys are gonna say what they want to say, and I honestly think that in today’s world, unfortunately, sometimes saying inflammatory things, you get rewarded for it whether there’s a lot of truth behind it or not,” Cousins said. “You know, I didn’t go over right away [to Crowder], but I did go over and just try to encourage the guys up and down, the receivers and the O-line and the running backs, let ‘em know we’re doing a lot of good things, we’re fine.”

Then came a new threat in the Jaguars’ defense. Brady needed to dig even deeper for something new to add to his legacy.

Brady has been through every situation, and he has learned from his past failures in the penultimate playoff round. He wasn’t in a Super Bowl on Sunday, but this AFC title game had the feel of those two big games in which the Patriots came up short against Tom Coughlin’s Giants. Brady wasn’t about to let that happen again against a different kind of Coughlin team.

If Brady were not 40, his 81.6 passer rating over the final five games of the season, which he played with a nagging Achilles’ injury, would be dismissed as part of a season’s typical ebb. The sterling late-season performance of Jimmy Garoppolo, the heralded backup the Patriots shipped to San Francisco for a second-round pick, would not have evoked panicked regret across New England.
