Calvin Johnson applauds NFL’s new catch rule: ‘We knew it was a catch from Day 1’

It was Calvin Johnson’s would-be touchdown that started the debate about what is and isn’t a catch eight years ago, and now that the NFL has rewritten a rule that he helped define, Johnson said he’s happy the league is finally using its common sense.

Since Johnson’s play, several other high-profile catch/no-catch rulings have impacted games.

Former Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant had a big fourth-down conversion overturned on replay in a 2015 playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers. Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Jesse James had his would-be go-ahead touchdown ruled incomplete in a crucial late-season loss to the New England Patriots last year. And in the Super Bowl, Corey Clement had a controversial touchdown ruled complete in the third quarter of the Philadelphia Eagles’ eight-point win.

Only one prospective employer called back with an offer.

The sixth-round selection of the New England Patriots in 2014 was now the draft pick of 3445 Car Store, an automotive dealership owned by Grant Bond, also a graduate of the University of Florida.

I really wasn’t very good at selling cars, I’ll just say that, Halapio told The Record and NorthJersey.com with a laugh Monday. I did what I had to do at the time, and taking that job [as a sales representative and internet marketing manager] was the only option available to me, so you do what you have to do.

He paused before adding with a smile: Even Joey Rickard Jersey though it seemed like it wasn’t going to happen, that was the longest year of my life, the first time I was away http://www.authenticcanadiens.com/-7-howie-morenz-jersey_c-520.html from football since I was Authentic Howie Morenz Jersey a little kid, yet I never stopped http://www.officialoriolesshop.com/authentic-23-joey-rickard-jersey.html believing I’d be here and earn this chance eventually.

White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu has mentored the 23-year-old and fellow Cuba native.

Right now, I’m advising him to be more aggressive, Abreu said through an interpreter to the Chicago Sun-Times. Figure out the way Julius Peppers Youth Jersey people are attacking him. White Sox right-hander James Shields (1-7, 4.92 ERA) will try to regain his footing after allowing seven earned runs in his most recent outing Thursday against the Minnesota Twins. In 20 career starts against the Indians, Shields is 4-7 with a 4.01 ERA. He has walked 35 and struck out 129 in 121 1/3 innings.

The 26-year-old allowed a total of three earned runs in his first two starts for the Indians, but he gave up five runs in five innings against the White Sox on May 28 for a 9.00 ERA.

The Indians sent Plutko back to the minors after that outing, but he did not show any signs of discouragement. Instead, he fired a no-hitter against Triple-A Syracuse on June 2. He narrowly missed a perfect game after issuing a walk in the ninth inning.

Nashville expected to be named 2019 NFL draft host at owners meetings

Nashville, Tennessee, is expected to be named host of the 2019 NFL draft at this week’s owners meetings in Atlanta, league sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday.

The league’s spring meetings are May 22-23.

I go out there and play baseball. I’m not getting distracted by any of this, said Machado, dressed in a Gucci wool cardigan adorned with tiger heads. “All these talks, rumors, they’re all rumors and talks. At the end of the day I got to go out there and perform and win games for this ballclub. We’re trying to make a push for things and we’re a little behind, but we’ve got to keep pushing forward.”

Mikhail Sergachev held the puck in the zone, sent it to Ondrej Palat, who backhanded it to Alex Killorn in the middle of three Capitals defenders, who slid it past goalie Braden Holtby.

It was six seconds after the penalty kill. It was six seconds that turned a golden chance for Washington in Game 4 on Thursday night at Capital One Arena to take control of this series into a wasted one. Instead, the Lightning evened the conference finals at 2-2 with a 4-2 win against the Capitals.

“I can call it what it is. It’s a missed opportunity. If we get one at home, it’s a different series,” said forward Tom Wilson, after a game that saw the Capitals tilt the ice with 65 shot attempts to 45 for the Lightning.

“You gotta stay positive. It could be more frustrating if it was the other way around: that they outplayed us and we got no looks and blah blah blah. We’re confident in our game. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy, and all those clichés. We were pretty happy with our game, outside of a couple of bounces.”

“I’ve received my 21 st offer and schools have been coming in and out lately checking on me,” he said. “Things are going great.”

How dumb does this allegedly smart man think the rest of us are?

Over and over again during Patricia’s seven-minute news conference after the Detroit News uncovered a 1996 grand jury indictment for aggravated sexual assault, he made two things abundantly clear.

The first was that he believes he was falsely accused. The second is that he did not believe that accusation, which wasn’t just hearsay but an actual arrest and formal charge, was something he was duty bound to disclose with potential employers as he rose the ranks and became an inevitable head coaching candidate.

The allegation didn’t seem to impact Patricia’s coaching career, if anyone knew about it at all. From a fledgling career as an engineer to football at Amherst, then Syracuse, then the New England Patriots, Patricia said it wasnever an issue when interviewing for jobs. Patriots coach Bill Belichick released a statement indicating the team was not aware of the matter which recently came to light and praised Patricia for having great integrity.

We broke the storyPenn was named a suspect in an April 29 incident when cops were called to his L.A. home to respond to a call about an altercation with his wife.

Cops were told Penn got handsy and, at one point, he allegedly poured a drink on her head.

Later, both Penn and his wife denied the altercation ever turned physical.

But once Patricia got on the fast track to becoming a head coach within the past couple years, the idea he would lack the self-awareness to anticipate his past resurfacing is simply not believable.

I’ve interviewed for a lot of jobs and, again, interviewing for jobs in engineering right after this happened it was never an issue, it never came up as anything because it was dismissed and I was innocent, Patricia said.

So it’s never been part of any process I’ve been involved with before.

Should he have done it? Putting it another way, would you have?

With 11 seconds remaining and the ball, the Celtics elected to take the clock all the way down and tried to spring Jaylen Brown off a stagger screen. Instead, Rozier, the third-year guard starting due to Boston’s injuries, drove when Eric Bledsoe hedged high to close the passing lane to Brown (whom the Bucks had switched on a screen to cover anyhow).

When Bledsoe raced to recover, Rozier stepped back and had all sorts of space behind the arc, drilling the would-be game winner with less than one second remaining.

Even though Murray didn’t put up the points on Saturday, the Sooners have been privately optimistic that with him running the show, they won’t skip much of a beat offensively despite graduating a Heisman Trophy winner who headlined the nation’s top offense on the way to leading them to the College Football Playoff.

But even after the injury bug raided the pantry this season, the Celtics are eager to show that the cupboards aren’t exactly bare.

LARKIN CHUCKLES NOW recalling how, just days after finalizing his deal with the Celtics, Ainge traded for Irving.

Welington Castillo (R), 49.8 percent, Chicago White Sox vs. Seattle Mariners (RHP Felix Hernandez): Castillo has been quiet since his two-homer April 2 output, but this could cure his woes.

Garcia said in March he had been cleared to return, but the Patriots apparently had a different opinion.

The Patriots are looking for options to replace left tackle Nate Solder (who split for the money with the Giants), and traded for Trent Brown to compete along with rookie Isaiah Wynn and others.

Patricia, based on his comments from Thursday, believes he was falsely accused, and that he did nothing wrong. If that’s the case, Patricia spent several months in 1996 constantly worrying about what would happen if the case went to trial, surely obsessing over everything from whether to testify, whether he’d be able to handle aggressive cross-examination, whether the jury would see his side of the case, whether the judge would be fair to him, and what will happen if he’s convicted of something he didn’t do?

Former LSU star Derrius Guice plays hero after car accident

Derrius Guice played the hero many times in his career at LSU, but the star running back pulled some real-life heroics Friday.

In a series of tweets on Twitter, Guice revealed that he witnessed an accident happen as he pulled up at a Baton Rouge intersection. He then helped free a woman who had been trapped in her car.

“Pulled up to a light in south Baton Rouge where a wreck occurred right as I pulled up,” Guice continued in his tweets. “It was a big truck and a smaller car. … I get out my car to check the scene and the lady was knocked on the back door window trapped by the airbags. … I opened the door, popped all the airbags and pulled her out.

“God is truly amazing and she’s in complete shock … She’s OK and she’s not hurt.”

On Friday, Sharp was honored in Chicago. He was given the A to wear on his sweater again and after the game did a lap in front of a cheering crowd.

“It’s never easy, but I’m just ready to take that next step in my life, and I’m looking forward to it,” Sharp said.

The Blackhawks honored Sharp with a highlight video in the third period, and he waved his stick and tapped his heart to acknowledge the sustained roar from what was left of the announced crowd of 22,218.

“It was a tough game out there, tough to concentrate with what was going on inside my head,” Sharp said. “But thankful that I was able to do that. The Hawks put that video on for me in the third, which was really special. The guys staying on the ice and making me do a lap was something I’ll always remember. So, special night.”

Rams’ male cheerleaders set to make NFL history

The Rams’ cheerleading squad this season will be unlike any other in NFL history as two men will take the field to perform dance routines each week.

Quinton Peron and Napoleon Jinnies, both classically trained dancers, were named to the team this week and spoke with Good Morning America on Wednesday.

My main message is we’ve got to defend, Kerr told reporters before Sunday’s win over the Suns. We’ve got to get back to being a top-five defensive team. I probably chose my words poorly in Indianapolis. When I said they didn’t care, that didn’t mean that they didn’t ‘care.’ What that meant to me was they didn’t box out. They didn’t get in the passing lanes. They didn’t compete at a high level.

Defense has been questionable in Golden State’s last two losses against Utah.

In January’s loss to the Jazz, for example, Utah shot 50 percent from 3-point range and 58 percent from the field overall. All five Jazz starters have averaged double figures in their last two games against the Warriors — with Mitchell leading the way at 20.5 points to go with 5.0 assists and 3.0 steals.

The parents of Smith’s alleged victim persuaded him to enter an unidentified rehabilitation facility the following day, and Smith then turned himself in to San Francisco police March 6 and was held on $30,000 bond..

He hasn’t played in an NFL game since November 2015 and is suspended indefinitely for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. He was released by the Raiders in the wake of his most recent off-field incident in a career filled with them.

Cavaliers: Cleveland nearly had its whole roster available, but Rodney Hood was ruled out with a sore left Achilles tendon. Guards George Hill (sprained left ankle) and Jose Calderon (sore left hamstring) both returned. … James can play in 82 games for the first time in his career if he plays Wednesday instead of resting for the playoffs, and that’s the way he’s leaning. I’m healthy, so I’m playing, he said.

Knicks: Hornacek said Hardaway and Kanter most likely wouldn’t play Wednesday, but didn’t rule it out. … Hardaway was called for a technical foul at the end of the first half.

Flyers and Panthers could play tiebreaker for final playoff spot

If the Philadelphia Flyers and Florida Panthers are even in points, regulation and overtime wins, and goal differential at the end of the season, they will play a one-game tiebreaker to determine who goes to the playoffs.

The NHL announced the unlikely but possible tiebreaker Friday as Philadelphia had one game and Florida two remaining. For the tiebreaker to happen on Tuesday, the Flyers would need to lose their regular-season finale Saturday against the New York Rangers by exactly two goals and the Panthers would need to beat the Buffalo Sabres and the Boston Bruins in a shootout Saturday and Sunday.

The league contacted the teams and the NHL Players’ Association before announcing the plan. Although a coin flip was the mechanism used in 2000, a lottery machine like the one that determines the top three draft picks would be used this time to decide which team gets home-ice advantage.

Panthers general manager Dale Tallon declined comment and a Flyers spokesman said GM Ron Hextall was not speaking about the tiebreaker.

Given the tightness of the standings in the East and West, it’s likely this situation spawns a longer list of tiebreakers beginning next season. Records against common opponents and within the conference could be used, as they are in the NFL.

Pereira wasn’t surprised there was a change made given the number of injuries this past season, but he compared the new rule to how players and officials reacted when the crown of the helmet rule was introduced in 2013.

Two were called the very first year and they were both wrong, and there were none called in the two years after that, Pereira said of the crown of the helmet rule. I see these things happen, I see these rule changes, and I don’t want to call it hysteria, but there is to me a bit of overreaction.

The new rule, which replaces the crown of the helmet rule, was approved unanimously by league owners in Orlando earlier this week in hopes of improving player safety.

For us this is a pretty significant change, NFL Competition Committee Chairman Rich McKay said in Orlando. This is not situational protection. … In this, we’re basically getting to a technique that is just too dangerous for both the player doing it and the player that’s getting hit.

Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton chalks poor start up to ‘a bad week’

Giancarlo Stanton’s first homestand as a member of the New York Yankees went far differently than he or anyone who visited Yankee Stadium this past week envisioned when he was traded to the club in the offseason.

Most pictured a lot of cheering. Instead, Stanton got his share of jeering.

En route to claiming last year’s National League MVP award, Stanton smacked a major league-leading 59 home runs. Judge led the American League with 52.

Stanton’s work with the Miami Marlins (he batted .268 with 267 home runs in eight seasons) made him a coveted player this past winter. But after his first 10 games with the Yankees, Stanton has some questioning whether they are witnessing the same player.

Along with his 0-for-7, five-strikeout performance in Sunday’s loss, Stanton went hitless and posted five strikeouts in his Yankees home debut on Tuesday.

That marks the first time in the live-ball era that a player has gone hitless with five strikeouts in two games in the same season, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Stanton also became the third player in the past 100 seasons to post multiple five-strikeout games in a season.

He signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent after three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons at Richmond. As a senior, he made 81 catches for 1,485 yards and 11 touchdowns in 14 games.

Damian Lillard led Portland with 25 points.

Jokic secured his 16th career triple-double when he fed Devin Harris for a 3-pointer that put the Nuggets ahead 73-71 with eight minutes left, their first lead of the second half.

They didn’t trail again.

The Nuggets’ big win came exactly one year after Russell Westbrook’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer gave Oklahoma City a 106-105 win at Denver that eliminated the Nuggets from last year’s playoff party.

This time, it was Denver that came up big in the end.
